Police have been unable to track down Tahunanui’s car tyre slasher. Last week several car owners had their car tyres slashed in both Muritai and Rawhiti Sts. Hannah McColloch and her four flatmates woke to find two cars, parked side by side, slashed outside their Rawhiti St property

by the Tahunanui School courts. “My flatmate’s girlfriend went out to go home at about 10pm. She heard a tyre leaking air from a car belonging to my flatmate, Yasmine Ohlson. She went back out and text me ‘mine’s leaking too’. The marks where the knife has gone into the tyre are only an inch long,” Hannah says. Hannah and her flatmates could not believe that somebody would do

this to the vehicles. “Who would do this? What joy do they get out of doing that to the tyres? They must have stood between the two cars and slashed both sides. I don’t get what people get out of doing this to other people, it’s just not nice.” Hannah’s initial thoughts were that the attack may have been targeted, due to a string of bad luck with another flatmate’s car a few weeks ago.

“Our other flatmate went out to Wakefield a few weeks ago. One week his side mirror was snapped off and the next week his window wiper had been snapped off. All three events have happened on Thursdays.” She also believes that it may be part of a string of car attacks that have hit the Tahunanui area recently.

Tweed may not be a popular fashion these days, but it made a spectacular comeback for the Retro Fun Ride on Sunday. Around 150 participants set off from the Honest Lawyer for the second Retro Fun Ride, dressed to impress in their best retro attire. “Nelson has a pretty amazing set of bike parks which are growing all the time, and to get people out on their bikes before the winter sets in; give them one last ride around, and to demonstrate that you can cycle in any clothes, you don’t need to be in lycra,” says event organiser Will Andrews. The winner of the mystery time, Anne Harvey, was awarded a bike from Alton Street Cycles, while the event’s “dashing dame”, Joyce Ballance, won a basket and bell, and “dapper chap”, Dylan Silbee, took home a Walz cap. Get Moving was a major sponsor with contributions also from Village Cycles and Avanti Plus.

“Apparently all around the neighbourhood there are issues with people breaking into cars and things at the moment. You see it posted all over Facebook pages.” Hannah phoned the police, who filed the complaint. Yasmine says she hopes they track down the culprit. She says she will have to wait to replace the tyre until she can afford a new one, but for now will have to use the spare. “It’s not something worth claiming under insurance as there is a $100 excess I would have to pay. Ty Archibald’s long-awaited dream finally came true when he and his young family moved into their new home at Mahana last week. The 35 year-old builder, who has colorectal cancer, always wanted to build his family a home on his fourth generation family property in Mahana. However, building plans were put on hold when he was diagnosed with his terminal illness in 2012. Stoke gets its own water geyser

There were as many red faces as there were yellow hi-viz vests on a construction site on Nayland Rd on Tuesday after an excavator hit a water main, sending a jet of water towering into the air. The Nayland Rd geyser was snapped by well-known Nelson photographer Grant Stirling who, says “there were plenty of anxious looks and discussions” from the contractors working on the site. He says the geyser erupted at about 9am and was “about the height of a lamp post”. “I was going to a job and saw it as I went past,” Grant says. “It was still going when I went back, so I took a photo on my phone – there was some serious pressure there.”

Family car burnt: A family car was stolen from a Richmond home on Thursday night and found burning next to the Appleby River on Friday morning. The husband of the car’s owner says he arrived home from a work function at around 8pm and the car was still in the driveway of their Park Drive home. At 7am Friday morning he says he answered a phone call from police telling him the car had been found burning in Appleby. “I said ‘no, it’s in the driveway’, but when I looked out the window it was gone.” He says his wife’s handbag and car seats for his three kids were in the car. “I’m absolutely shattered,” he told Nelson Live. Richmond Fire Brigade chief, Ralph Lonsdale, says a similar incident occurred on Wednesday morning. “It’s the second stolen car that’s been found burning in the past three days. The other was stolen from Brightwater but also dumped in Appleby.” The story was first reported by Nelson Live. Cliff strengthening: Around 220 rock anchors, 1,660m2 of ‘shotcrete’ and nearly 1,400m2 of mesh will be used as part of strengthening work on the Rocks Rd cliff face over the next six months. NZ Transport Agency says areas of highest risk will be addressed first with a focus on stabilising the rock face. A secondary phase will aim at reducing the amount of material that falls onto the road, and reduce the risk of rock slides from bad weather conditions.

Internet slow-down blamed on Netflix Slow internet speeds in parts of Nelson are being put down to a movie streaming service, according to a national expert. TrueNet Broadband performance expert, John Butt, says Nelson is experiencing a similar slow-down to many other parts of the country. He says he is putting this down to the recent uptake of Netflix in New Zealand after it was launched on March 24. Netflix allows subscribers to watch movies and television shows via the internet, clogging up the network. John says, nationally, Netflix

dropping from 100 per cent in March to 62 per cent in April. Nelson man Nick Rose uses Spark ADSL broadband and is experiencing a “quite limiting” connection. He says Spark is blaming the reduced speed on its own Lightbox video service, which is similar to Netflix. “I did the speed check on the Spark site and it was ridiculously low. I gave them a ring and the lady then told me that between 8pm and 10pm lots of people were experiencing a slow-down due to the uptake of Lightbox and the network can’t cope with it.”

could account for 25 per cent of all internet traffic, a huge increase from nothing a month ago. “The ISPs [internet service providers] would have had to forecast that, for any ISP 25 per cent in traffic is a massive increase. I think the chances of knowing it would be 25 per cent would be very, very slim.” TrueNet has ten “probes” in Nelson which measure the percentage change in speed between the best and worst speeds. Two of those probes have dropped dramatically in speed over the past month, with one Nelson probe

Cone put on top of Cathedral

A road cone has been placed on top of the flag pole at the top of the Cathedral’s tower. Reverend Nick Kirk says he was notified yesterday about the cone and believes the tower was climbed externally. “I think they’ve gone up the outside which is obviously dangerous.” He says Cathedral staff are in discussions about removing the cone.

First fifty homes warmed up in time for winter Andrew Board

Fifty Nelson homes will have a warmer start to winter this year thanks to a local initiative to warm up older homes. The Warmer Healthier Homes project has insulated 48 homes, with 115 due to be finished by the end of June. Steering group member Bill Dahlberg says it’s just the beginning, with the region’s councils now on the verge of joining the group, helping to extend the reach of the programme. The programme began retro-fitting its first home late last year and uses money from the Canterbury Community Trust, government group ECCA, and staff support from the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board and Nelson Tasman Housing

“It’s really exciting. Everybody understands that warming up someone’s house covers lots of areas in the community. This is the one where you can make a lot of difference across all the sectors.” He says it was the support of the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board that helped kick the project off. “When I met [DHB chief executive] Chris Fleming, they were in the red and struggling with their own capital and getting their budgets in place. But he loved the project so what he gave me was some resources – people. “They did all that technical stuff and knew how to meet the right people. The DHB and the Canterbury Community Trust were the two major cogs in getting us going,” he says.

that hasn't affected her optimism. If anything, the work she does at Barnardos has a positive affect, because "it reminds me of what I need to do to be a good parent." For Cheryl, looking after children is something her family has always done. "My father was fostered and my grandfather on my mother's side always fostered children, so that's how I grew up. But it also has to be a family decision and a decision you make with your partner, because they are a big part of fostering as well." Cheryl, who is also an emergency caregiver for Child, Youth and Family and often takes in children at short notice, says caring for children is also her way of repaying a community that has "given me so much". "I came down to Nelson with nothing and managed to get a degree and a good job with help from Ngati Koata. They have been very, very good to me so I am lucky to be in a position where I can give something back." Chris and Alex Chisnall at the Rainbow Snow Gear Sale on Saturday. There was barely room to breathe as hundreds of people flocked to Hampden St School for Rainbow’s annual sale of snow gear. Last year saw a record sale and this year they managed to exceed that with just over $60,000 worth of ski gear sold. Rainbow Ski Area staff hope those numbers “will relate to what happens on the hill this year”. The proposed opening date for the ski area is Saturday July 4. The sale raised more than $9000 for Rainbow. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

No compensation for nuclear bomb ‘guinea pigs’, Tuesday May 5: Neil Balloch was overwhelmed with the response to last week’s story. He says he’s had requests from the UK to republish the story and had phone calls and messages from all over Nelson. “I had someone call me up saying, ‘I don’t really know you and you don’t know me, but I support what you’re trying to do. Good luck’. That’s incredible to me. I’m really overwhelmed.” Art@203 Collective, Tuesday, April 30: Art@203 Collective has had a positive response after seeking new artists to become a part of their collective. Three artists have already stepped forward, including two local artists; one that creates glass art and the other who uses paint on canvas, while the third is a well known Golden Bay artist who also uses paint on canvas as her medium. Before being accepted into the collective, the current members will meet on Tuesday night to discuss each artist, looking at the art to make sure it is unique and does not clash with pieces already exhibiting in the collective. Locals off to Nepal, Tuesday, April 30: The locals off to Nepal this month are thrilled with the quiz night they hosted on May 7. With just over 50 people in attendance, the event not only raised much needed funds for the rebuild of Nepal after the earthquake but raised awareness for the cause locally. There were also a couple of generous donations made on the night. Their original objective was to build a school in a remote village, but with earthquake damage a priority it looked like the project would be put on hold. Those going on the trip are pleased to say that the construction of the school will still be possible and they will be leaving for Nepal on May 24. Those wanting to support their trip to Nepal can donate through Aspire Church - 123165-0150262-01, with the reference – Nepal.

Community hoping to buy new leg for Deanna

100

%

locally owned and operated

Jessie Johnston For seven year old Deanna Marsden, life will never be quite the same again. A week before Christmas last year, Deanna was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer that has now resulted in the amputation of her right leg. Since January, she has been living in Christchurch receiving chemotherapy, and just after Easter she received the operation that saw the removal of her leg from the upper thigh, where a large tumour was located. While her parents Adam and DJ have been alternating their time with Deanna to continue caring for her three sisters still in Nelson, they have recently both been with their daughter for the operation and post-operation support. Her diagnosis was due to an accident she had whilst playing with friends at the church the Stoke family attends, St Stephens Community Church, as what appeared to be a normal fall caused Deanna a huge amount of pain. St Stephens has gotten behind Deanna 100 per cent, organising an event to fundraise for a prosthetic. “Deanna has always been a really active kid. On the day she was diagnosed she was running, that’s when she fell over and hurt herself, and that’s how they discovered that she had the cancer. Our hope is that we can get her a sport prosthetic. She gets a normal one from the hospital board anyway, but we would like her to get a reinforced sports one so she’s got a bit more bounce and she’ll be able to run again. That is the ultimate hope,” says church member Kirsty Tough. The prosthetic will cost $7000 dollars but the church hopes to raise $10,000 in order to help out with the families ongoing costs. Although the operation has been completed, Deanna still needs to continue chemotherapy for a further six months or more. The church will be hosting Shave Off 4 Kick Off Carnival on Saturday May 16, from 10am until 2pm, and along with your usual carnival activities, there will be ten people shaving their heads to raise funds for Deanna. Tahunanui businesses are also doing their bit to support Deanna, donating a huge number of items to the silent auction. St Stephens invites everyone to come along and support Deanna’s cause, or people can donate to her Give-a-Little page deannamarsdensupport2014, or the church fund set up for her - 03 0703 0345232 25, with the reference – Deanna.

St Stephens Community Church members Liz Gray, Kirsty Tough and Nathaniel Petterson invite people to come to their carnival to get Deanna Marsden a prosthetic leg. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Opinion

TUESDAY 12 May 2015

Trafalgar Centre open in February: It makes me laugh. Nelson and the region have historic old buildings that tourists take pictures of, and the council just let them rot, yet this eyesore of a building which is obscenely ugly is having more millions spent of it, what a waste! Brian Gower. Nice white elephant. What a balls-up this all was!!! Good on ya, NCC. Janelle Thorpe.

Signs for Nelson, too! Or take the bloody things away. Nancy Holden. They are so dangerous - especially in Nelson where you are trying to negotiate you way around a corner and wham.. someone has walked out and you have to remain in the middle of the road - stuck. Crazy system here. Nickie Sue.

Will the Giants be playing there or still at Saxton? Tyler Mcconchie.

Makes no difference, people will tell you that crossing rules don't apply, especially if it's a raised crossing. Eric Watts.

Can't really understand why it was closed down in the first place. Jenny Cunningham.

Pedestrians take it as their right to cross with half head down on cell phone, not watching. Sue Sara.

Broken ankle on courtesy crossing: It is obvious that they are courtesy crossings not pedestrian crossings. Many times I see pedestrians just walk out without looking; expecting traffic to stop. It does not take much to acknowledge the traffic by making eye contact and at times I have waved them on because I want them to keep going, but they stop anyway. So a friendly thank you wave in return ensures everyone is safe. Maybe signs would help, but courtesy means just that – we are too “over-signed” now! People don’t have to think anymore about their driving or road behaviour. Margie Silich.

Pedestrians need more educating on how to use these crossings. John Sauer. Signs would be a good start, and painted on the crossing itself (as they are in Hanmer Springs) to let pedestrians know that they should give way. Tania Preston Brunell. In Hanmer, the pedestrians have to give way. I love the courtesy crossings because, as a taxi driver and having paying customers, I can nudge my way onto them and carry on, but a pedestrian crossing I have to stop and give way. In Nelson it's bad, the pedestrians don't care if you have paying

customers, they just keep walking out. I have had customers get out and tell people how ignorant they are. Garry and Maree Smith. Don't walk out in front of moving cars, treat it like you are crossing the road because that's what you are doing, common sense really. People need to stop trying to bubble wrap everything it's a joke. Glenn Taylor. There are so many tourists and newcomers here in Nelson who don't understand these crossings. I didn't when I moved here, they don't look like your average pedestrian crossing. Donna Jan. Smiley Cindi brightens up road works: My husband told me about her then we passed her the other day and she's as smiley and wavey as he had told me! Made our day. Elaine Lourens. So cool to see a nice smiley face and a wave, instead of grumpy looking guys, doing this thankless job. Penny King. She's bloody good value, great effort. Matthew Allsopp. Brightened my day on my way to work. Pauline Bishell. To have your say on any local issue, email editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Nelson firefighter off to take on the world Andrew Board

If you see a firefighter in full kit running up and down the Tamaki St steps over the next few months, there’s no need to panic, it’s just Haydn Parker training for the “toughest two minutes of sport”. Haydn is a professional firefighter in Nelson and is training hard for the World Firefighter Combat Challenge in the United States later this year. It will be Haydn’s third trip to the states for the challenge, but the first time in six years. He says he’s been putting in plenty of training already and that he’s feeling fitter than ever. “It’s been six years since I last raced and I’m six years older, but I definitely feel like I’m in better shape and I wouldn’t be going all the way to America if I didn’t think I could achieve the goal.” The challenge sees two firefighters race each other up six flights of stairs while carrying a 20kg hose. Then, when they get to the top, they lift another 20kg hose up via a rope, then run back down and hit a “kaiser force machine”, in which contestants have to hit a 75kg beam 1.5 metres with a 4kg mallet. Then run in and out of small fire hydrants, pick up a hose and drag it for 22 metres, and then through saloon doors and use the water from the hose to hit a target. Finally, contestants pick up an 82kg dummy and drag it 30 metres to cross the finish line. Haydn says around 800 firefighters from all over the world will attend the champs, which are

dubbed the “toughest two minutes of sport”. “They say that because if you do it in two minutes you’re doing well because it’s so full on, so intense.” Last time Haydn competed his best time was 1 minute and 41 seconds, an agonising two seconds off reaching the exclusive “Lion’s Den” club for those who compete it in under 1 minute 40 seconds. “They give you a gold coin with a lion’s head on it and they present you with an American varsity jacket, they’re real big on it.” The event also has team and tandem races and Haydn says his team is made up of fire fighters from Wellington, Auckland and Tauranga. He says the biggest problem for his training is Nelson’s lack of high-rise buildings. “The best I’ve got is Tamaki St steps to get my stair work in. But that is pretty brutal.” The challenge is in Montgomery, Alabama, in October this year, Haydn is trying to raise some money to help him get there. He says he’s already had support from Russell and Andrea Coburn from Spark Digital, but would love some more. If you’re keen to help, email haydn.parker@gmail. com

Cash from car deal will help boxing gym

A new deal between Bowater Hyundai and Isuzu will help Victory Boxing Charitable Trust. Chris Bowater must really love the work done by Victory Boxing – first he stepped in the ring for them and now he’s giving them $300 from every car sold through Bowater Hyundai or Isuzu. Chris was one of the original Fight 4 Victory contestants and has been a sponsor since. But he’s decided to take his sponsorship even further by giving $300 from every new or used car sold through the two car yards, to the gym. All you have to do is present a Victory Boxing voucher for the money to go to the gym. The concept is quite simple. Buy a car from either Bowater Hyundai or Bowater Isuzu, negotiate your price, and once you have a price head along to Victory Boxing on Vanguard St to pick up a free voucher. Take that voucher back to Chris and his team and he’ll write a cheque for $300 to the charitable trust that runs the gym. He already written one cheque after Gibbons Holdings bought a car from him and then brought the voucher along to help the gym. “This is a genuine thing. We give $300 above anything else because

I love what they’re doing,” says Chris. “If you’re looking for a car and like what Victory Boxing are doing, you’ll at least come in the door and have a look. You want to make sure you’re getting the best deal and that it fits your needs, but if we can do a deal that works for the customer it will also benefit Victory Boxing,” he says. “Hopefully, it will add up over the year, I’d love to give thousands of dollars away.” Victory Boxing programme director Paul Hampton says the support from Chris and Bowater Hyundai and Isuzu has always been very strong, but he’s delighted with this latest concept. “Obviously we really appreciate our relationship with Chris and we’re really excited that they decided to extend it. Donations like this are really fantastic for us. We have a lot of running costs and with so many kids now the upkeep of gear is a big thing that draws money.” Chris says there is no time limit on the offer, so people can take their time to find the best car for them and still take advantage of the deal.

Church hosts week-long 'Hopefest' The Hope Community Church will be showing that is more blessed to give than to receive, when it holds its fourth Hopefest Big Share Fair on Saturday. The Big Share Fair is the opening event of the week-long Hopefest which starts on Saturday, and will feature a series of free activities and seminars at the church on Ranzau Rd. Thousands of items will be given away during Saturday's Big Share Fair, which senior pastor Donald Irvine says is always the highlight of Hopefest. "We had about 200 people lined up outside waiting to get in when the doors were opened at 9.30am last time," Donald says. "It will be the fourth time we have held the Big Share Fair and it's always been very popular." The church started Hopefest in

2008 as a way to celebrate its first birthday and Donald says it's a nice way for them to give back to the community. The church's "family" has donated most of the items, which will be purchased using Hope Notes handed out for free at the door. "Last time, we had a family walk out from Richmond," Donald says. "They were here at 9am and collected enough things to kit out a fair bit of their house. "They had moved down from Auckland and the parent obviously needed a hand, so we gave them a few extra Hope Notes to spend. That's what this event is all about." There will be free food and "good coffee" available at the Big Share Fair and although everything is free, Donald says people are welcome to make a donation to the church.

"We've turned a conventional quiz night around and the first five teams give their prize money away to the charities instead of keeping it themselves." Donald says the three seminars cover a range of topics, including dealing with anxiety and stress and the challenges of living in the digital age. The seminars are also free and will be held next week from May 19-21 starting at 7.30pm with no booking required. A concert with Elvis impersonator Mark Borg will be held on Saturday May 23. Hopefest concludes with a Sunday morning church service on May 24 with guest speaker Jim Hickey. Donald says the former television weather presenter, who "encountered God in a miraculous way" and will be a big attraction.

Nelson Live's zippy new wheels

Nelson Live's Steve Page on the new Vespa that you'll see running around town.

Nelson Live has a new way to zip about town and collect the latest news and information – a bright red (and quite sexy) Vespa. The Vespa was bought from Filco Farm and Sport and has certainly got a lot of attention since it started whizzing around Nelson and Tasman roads at the start of April. Nelson Live’s Steve Page says he’s been riding the Vespa all over town and he’s been getting plenty of great comments.

Women's choir looking for members

A Nelson-based women's choir is looking for new members so that it can keep "having fun" entertaining the community with their singing. The Te Manawa World Music Choir was formed in March 2007 and has subsequently performed at concerts throughout the Nelson region "three or four times a year". But now the acapella choir is losing some of its regular members and it needs some new recruits to keep singing. "Mosaic was the first Nelson women's acapella choir, but it had such a long waiting list we decided to form our own choir," choir member Vicki Spiers says. "We have grown from that to have about 15 to 20 singers, but we are losing seven overseas in the next few months so we need more singers." Vicki says the choir rehearses at the Reformed Church of Nelson at 15 Burrough Place in Enner Glynn, every Thursday at 7.15pm. They perform at events and venues around Nelson and are fortunate to have a "most fantastic conductor" in Paxe Archer and a wonderful group of singers. "We regularly perform at the Lantern Festival, and have sung at Matariki at the Victory Community Centre and for the residents at Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village. We love it singing is good for the soul and we enjoy the friendships we have developed." Vicki says they sing songs from many different cultures, in two, three and four part harmony. Anyone interested in joining the group can email Vicki at karlin.vicki@gmail.com

19

“People love it. I had a Harley until recently and I get more comments about the Vesper than I ever did about the Harley, it’s quite hard case.” The Vespa adds to the Nelson Live fleet of vehicles which drive its dedicated journalists around town, covering the latest news and events. If you have a news story or tip, let Nelson Live know and you could win $50 cash. Simply email the details to reporter@ nelsonlive.co.nz or phone 021 972 572.

Warriors donate cash to kids charity Funds raised from the inaugural Wairua Warrior obstacle race held last month have been donated back into the community. The event, held at Happy Valley Adventures in Cable Bay, saw people of all fitness levels competing in a six kilometre or 12 kilometre obstacle course. Donna and Greg Witika from Nelson’s Wairua Body Coaching Systems organised the event, together with members of the Wairua Mud Rookies. The group wanted to give something back to the community and presented a cheque for $2,500 to the Nelson Life Education Community Trust last week. The Witika’s chose the charity because they have seen first hand the impact that

the Nelson Life Education Trust has on children within primary and intermediate schools. “It is great being able to support a charity for kids, we have seen Harold the Giraffe in the school over the years as we have children,” says Donna. Established in Nelson over 12 years ago, the Life Education Community Trust is a non-profit organisation that provides primary and intermediate school children with knowledge about health and their bodies, helps develop self-esteem, and assists students with developing strategies for relating to others. The programmes take children on an adventure in a mobile classroom equipped with sight and sound,

designed to make the journey fun as well as educational, with Harold the Giraffe as mascot. The trust educated 5299 students last year in Nelson and they are highly dependent on funding and support from local sponsors. “Life Education is all about the kids, health and nutrition, it is great to be involved with Wairua Warrior as it promotes living a healthy lifestyle. We really appreciate their financial support, the programme’s operating costs alone are $17 per child and only $4 out of that is supplied by the schools and parents, so we need to find the remaining funds,” says Michelle Fitzgerald, chair of the Life Education

Trust Nelson. In addition to this, the group also presented a $500 cheque to Sean Tremlett, who suffers from chronic epilepsy. He will represent New Zealand in basketball at the Special Olympics to be held in the USA in July. “Sean’s mother attends our gym and we also have a son with, epilepsy, so it is something that we connect with and it is once in a lifetime opportunity for Sean to go to the Special Olympics and we wanted to help out,” says Donna. The couple would like to see the Wairua Warrior event grow in the future so they can give back to the community again next year.

GENERATIONS OF NELSON Brought to you by Marsden House

The NewmaN coNNecTioN The Newman name has a long association with Nelson transport. In 1879 brothers Harry and Tom won a mail and passenger contract to run a two horse coach from Foxhill to Hampden. By 1883 New-

man coaches were running from Foxhill to Lyell, Reefton and Westport and by 1888 a Nelson to Blenheim passenger service. The business sold in 1919 but the brothers remained on the board. Eventually Tom’s son Jack (Sir Jack) took over.

The Hope Community Church will be giving away more than just material goods at the biennial Hopefest which gets underway with the Big Share Fair this Saturday. The Big Share Fair is the opening event of the week-long Hopefest and pastor Donald Irvine says they have thousands of items ready to give away to the community. But there will also be plenty of free advice and wisdom given away during Hopefest with three topical seminars planned for next week. The first seminar, Anxiety and Stress - don’t worry about it any longer, will be presented by Jaap and Wilma Noteboom at the church on Tuesday May 19 starting at 7.30pm. It will be a comprehensive look at the ins and outs of anxiety and stress, our emotional and physical response, and, more importantly, how to deal with it. Jaap and Wilma are also presenting the second seminar, titled It’s All About the Family on Wednesday May 20. It starts at 7.30pm and looks at what parents should know about brain development, ages and stages, teenagers, and healthy relationships. Dorothy Burt presents the third seminar, Challenges of Living in the Digital Age, on Thursday May 21 starting at 7.30pm. She will talk about smart kids with their smart devices and up-skilling parents and grandparents in digital technology.

All the seminars are free with no booking required. Hopefest will also include a charity quiz night on Friday May 22 when the winners will get to give a total prize pool of $3000, donated by the church, to the Nelson Tasman Hospice, Nelson-Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, St John, Big Brothers, Big Sisters and Red Cross Refugee Services. “We’ve turned a conventional quiz night around and the first five teams give their prize money away to the charities instead of keeping it themselves,” Donald says. A concert with Elvis impersonator Mark Borg, with local supporting artists will be held on Saturday May 23. Hopefest concludes with a Sunday morning church service on May 24 with guest speaker Jim Hickey. Donald says the former television weather presenter “encountered God in a miraculous way” and will be a big attraction. For more information on Hopefest go to the website hopefest.co.nz or phone the church on 544 6628. Speakers Dorothy Burt, Wilma and Japp Noteboom.

Mother's Day celebrated with a run and a laugh

Monique Bergman

While many mums were tucked up receiving breakfast in bed on mother’s day, some were out hitting the pavement hard and having fun in the annual Jennian Homes Mother’s Day 5 kilometre walk/run. Around 650 people competed in the event, which saw competitors run or walk around a five kilometre loop course that started and finished at the Jennian Homes Nelson Bays complex in Champion Rd, Richmond. “We would like to thank the local businesses for their support of the event, and all the mothers, daughters and family members who participated. It was a tremendous atmosphere with so many ladies turning up, it was such a fun event for everyone involved,” says Daryl O’Reilly, general manager of Jennian Homes Nelson Bays. The race, which began in Nelson in 2009, has now gone nationwide with over 5000 competitors from around the country involved. The event is open to women of all ages and fitness levels, and not only sees them joining together and getting active on Mother’s Day but delivers a serious message too. Heart disease is the single biggest killer

of New Zealand women, claiming the lives of over 3000 ladies each year. Simon Collett, owner of Jennian Homes Nelson Bays, says they have partnered up with the Heart Foundation to support its Go Red for Women campaign, which aims to help stop our women dying prematurely of heart disease. “It is about creating awareness of heart disease, and encourages women to look after themselves and keep fit and healthy,” says Simon. Nelson Cardiologist, Dr Tammy Pegg, spoke to the crowd before the race about heart disease and keeping women healthy. She urged every woman to ring 111 first if ever suffering from symptoms relating to heart issues, and advised them that ringing an ambulance gives them a better chance of survival. Andrea Thompson of Nelson won the major spot prize of a ladies mountain bike, donated by Village Cycles and Jennian Homes. There were also around 100 spot prizes on offer including vouchers, jewellery and travel vouchers. At the time of the Nelson Weekly going to print, the amount of money raised for the Heart Foundation was still being calculated.

Wolves win nail-biter in Brightwater

Wanderers Wolves player Bryce Taylor swandives to score a try at Lord Rutherford Park in Brightwater on Saturday. Photo: Chris Symes/Shuttersport.

It was a nail-biting rugby league match between the Wanderers Wolves and the Tahunanui Tigers at Lord Rutherford Park, Brightwater last weekend. In a tight game, the Wanderers led by one try going into the half time break with a score of 18-12. The Tigers fought hard in the second half and looked like they were going to come back, until Bryce Taylor kicked the winning field goal for the Wanderers to make it a final score of 29 to 28 to the Wolves on the final whistle. Bryce was strong throughout the game, scoring two tries and kicking all of the goals for the home side. The other game in round six was a blow out, with Victory Phoenix beating the Marlborough-based Wairau Taniwha convincingly, 56 to 16.

Fishing with

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club The winter season is now upon us and if you have finished your fishing for the year there are some basic things you should be doing to protect your prized possessions for the next few months. If you are not mechanically-minded, the safest thing to do is take your boat to the experts and get them to perform a winterization routine on the engine, steering, and electrical components, and a once-over of the boat and trailer to ensure they are both safe and sound. There are things, however, that you can look at yourself that don’t require you to be a boat mechanic. Remove squabs and lifejackets to dry storage. Squabs and lifejackets should be washed in fresh water before being stored, as salt deposits will stop them drying out fully and cause mould and mildew to form. Take gadgets, fishing tackle, rods and reels, indoors to prevent theft. This is especially important if you store your boat on the street or a driveway. Check the expiry date of your flare kits and top up the first aid kit as necessary. Check torches, spotlights, cookers, toilets, anchor rope and chain are still in good working order. Check electrical connections for corrosion. Replace any corroded connections, and cover all connections with a corrosion inhibitor (CRC Lanocote works well) to prevent further damage. Make sure the bilge pumps work. Clean out any ‘gunk’ from strainers and float switches if fitted, and make sure your bilge pump works well, and your batteries can keep up. Turn off your main battery switch to prevent drain-down, or remove batteries from your boat completely. Make sure you keep your batteries charged – they will lose charge gradually, even when not in use, which will reduce battery lifespan

Paul Maskell with a nice D’Urville Blue Cod. significantly. Remove trailer rust. A quick scrub with a Scotch-brite or wire brush should remove surface rust. While you’re checking for rust, have a look for any loose fittings, particularly on alloy boats, to help prevent rust stains and corrosion caused by dissimilar metals. Apply a rust-killing product where minor corrosion does appear. Check the wheel bearings and bearing buddies, but don’t overfill them with grease. Check the lights all work, the winch strap is not frayed and that the trailer brakes are working ok. A good idea is to put the boat in the water and give the trailer a thorough once over, as it is much easier to also check the rollers and inside the box framing of the trailer for rust without the boat on it. The last thing your boat probably needs is a thorough clean inside and out. Removing absolutely everything off the boat enables you to see the state of all your gear and clean it, throw it out or replace as necessary. Finally, cover it up. A good boat cover will help protect your boat from the weather over winter, not to mention the prying eyes of would-be thieves.

First round indicates tough SportS netball season ahead editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz

The three remaining quarters were all drawn to bring the final score to 23–19. Harriet Ogilvie was a revelation at goal attack as she slotted a number of long-range shots, so good to see a young player prepared to attempt them. Bailee Tava worked the circle well with Harriet, and was prepared to venture outside the shooting circle to offer a different option. Sheree Peters proved to be a worthy replacement at goal shoot in the final quarter when she converted four from four. Grace Young worked hard at wing attack to deliver quality ball to her shooters, while circle defenders Maddi Springer and Alex Bloomberg toiled throughout. Maddi showed that she has gathered an abundance of knowledge from being around the netball courts over the years, she has a great understanding of the game and was a competent ball carrier through court. Alex read play well and despite her height she had great positioning to gain three re-

Nicole Whiting worked hard at centre to contain Waimea’s playmaker Jess Kelly. Taylah Kirker is a valuable asset on court in whatever position she plays and was sorely missed when

she was substituted as she, too, looks long and directs play well. Once she found her rhythm, Tayler Boeyen was the most accurate shooter as she returned a commendable 75 per cent goal average. It will be interesting to see how the girls develop during the season, both as individuals and as a team.

Last week’s solutions

Nelson Netball tipped off their 2015 season at Saxton Stadium on Saturday, with early indications being that the Grade 1 competition is set to be a closely-fought encounter. The draw is a seeded one, and it was only the club derby between top and bottom seeds Jacks Navy and Jacks Silver, which created the biggest margin of the day 40-28. It will be interesting to see how the remaining six teams, all College teams, develop throughout the season, as it is likely that they have not had a long preparation for the competition. Nelson College for Girls Senior B sneaked passed Suburban Blue 31-30, while the 10A’s defeated Rival Blue Diamonds 35–33. Waimea College 10A were quick out of the blocks in their match up against Nayland College A, with dynamic centre Jess Kelly to the fore. She played a strong defensive game, at times took difficult ball through the mid court, and it was pleasing to see her look long to her shooters and deliver precision feeds. Waimea played their best netball in the first stanza when they outscored Nayland 8–4.

FOOTBALL: Nelson Suburbs Seals have taken top spot in the Nelson Bays Football first division competition, after a 2-1 win over Marlborough on Saturday. In the other games, Suburbs 1st XI beat Nelson College Academy 7-0 and Nelson College 1st XI beat Wakefield 7-0. Richmond and FC Nelson will play each other on Wednesday night as they were involved in a Chatham Cup game on Sunday. Richmond won that game 3-1.
